A Boosts, Features, and the Challenge of Being Read on Medium
Reflections on Medium’s Algorithms, Earnings, and the Struggle for Visibility
It’s no secret — getting people to really read your work these days is tough. On Medium, the focus on publications, boosts, and features is understandable. After all, the platform wants to highlight quality writing and steer clear of AI-generated fluff. But I can’t help noticing how often the spotlight seems to fall on the same voices, repeatedly.
For those of us trying to build an authentic audience from scratch — without the backing of a big publication or a coveted boost — it can feel like an uphill climb. While the intention behind these systems is clear and well-meaning, I wonder: is there enough room for a more diverse range of perspectives, stories, and topics to shine?
The Earnings Equation
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: earnings. It’s not just visibility that’s at stake. A lack of boosts and features often translates to significantly lower earnings, no matter how much effort you pour into your work. That’s just the reality of Medium’s payment structure.
I’ve had moments where I earned a fraction of a cent for a read. Yes, 0.01 USD. It’s disheartening, especially when you consider the broader irony: as a community, we criticize unequal wealth distribution in society, yet sometimes replicate those same dynamics here on this platform.
Could Medium strive for a system that feels a little less lopsided? Could we find ways to reward writers equitably, not just based on algorithmic luck or editorial selection? These are questions worth exploring as we build this platform together.
The Diversity of Medium Readers
To be fair, Medium’s audience is vast and varied. Readers come from all over the world, bringing diverse interests to the table. Some seek professional advice, others are drawn to self-improvement, and many love a good, personal story.
It’s possible that my own writing — my chosen topics, my style, or the way I frame my ideas — doesn’t always align with what the broader Medium audience is looking for. I’ll admit it: I’m not the best storyteller when it comes to deeply personal or emotional narratives.
And that’s okay.
Gratitude in the Journey
One day, I believe, my work will be boosted or featured. Until then, I remain deeply thankful to the publication editors who’ve given my stories a home. I’m equally grateful for every single reader who’s taken the time to engage with my self-published work.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about boosts or features. It’s about connecting with people — however many or few — who resonate with what you have to say.
And for that, I’m endlessly appreciative.
