How is Abortion Like Smoking and Drinking?

We need a new way to think about abortion.

The abortion debate is currently dominated by religious zealots, political power grubbers, and a sycophantastic (sic) Supreme Court. What it needs is serious thought.

The fundamentalist interpretation of “abortion” has caused much death, pain, and suffering.

“I believe in the right to abortion” starts a fight refereed by a biased Supreme Court.

I suggest we think about abortion the way we think about smoking and drinking. You don’t want your daughters doing them. Life happens. You don’t want drinking, smoking, or abortions to kill them. Efforts to ban or curb them have been unsuccessful. They are bred into human physiology.

Banning drinking sent it underground and enriched the mob.

Banning smoking has never been taken seriously.

Banning abortion increases the incidence of both abortion and maternal mortality.

Whether outlawed or accepted, all three have been part of the human experience since there were humans. The first recorded induced abortion was in 1550 BCE.
