Finding Héctor

There was a time when abuela called the mice in the walls Shredders, and we took turns burning phone books to keep warm. But don’t go there.

Produce nothing a literary agent would buy. To hell with entertainment. Go after what’s unsaid.

Don’t perform. Seek a joyful transition.

Say you want to write about a hot dog.

Scene, research, scene, research. Creative nonfiction, much like Ciara, is well known for this 1, 2 Step. You could write:

“My first job was at the concession stand of a baseball park in midtown Anchorage. I worked at Mulcahy Stadium because Teresa Jennings made a point of hiring trans and queer people. She was a den mother for teenage feys and the only candid source of sexual education. 15 years have passed but the strength of her wisdom endures…
