MEDITATIVE MEAL
When only nourishment can get you through the difficult times.
Yesterday morning I sat down to meditate and it took me more than a hot second to calm my inner monkey. At that moment, I was taken back to the time when I was first learning how to meditate, some 28 years ago. The memory and feeling came back as clear as the radiant summer light.
For many years I went to go to yoga, tai chi, and kung fu classes in the ice cold Cultural Center of the Albaicín quarter of Granada. We finished each class with, what was for me at the time, a very lengthy meditation. It was the beginning of my long relationship with this life changing practice.
Besides the lack of warmth in the room, I also remember every bit of my body from my chest down falling asleep. The kind of sleep that goes beyond the pins and needles in your skin, and you can no longer move a single muscle. I would have to massage every muscle in my legs in order to stand up and avoid looking like a newborn goat.
It took me ages until I got used to sitting for long periods of time and my mind could relax into a meditative state. My jittery nature and restless soul were not easy to dominate, even after years of yoga practice. But, I was determined and had finally found a teacher that inspired me.
