Do You Have a Social Life?
Filled with friends who you could call day or night?
I don’t remember the last time I went out with a friend for a coffee or a meal. Let alone a spontaneous film night or weekend getaway.
I used to have a few close friends when I was at school and university. Then we went our separate ways. We stopped communicating because we no longer needed to be at a particular class, social event, or meet mutual friends. I didn’t think much of it then.
Now all of these years later, I occasionally come across a Facebook memory that triggers a deep sense of loss. Even though names and faces are familiar, I have no idea what is happening in their lives. A series of questions go around in my head:
Are they up north, overseas, or near the capital? Are they married with children? Working in an office job like me or doing something to help others? Perhaps they run their own business- who knows?
I imagine what lives they lead without clicking on their photos but then I stop. It makes me sad; I miss the few friends I used to have—the ones who would be there for me when I was ill, or when we laughed so hard because of joy and silly banter.
