Be a Consumer First, Not a Content Creator

Here’s why you should be.

I’ve discovered many neurodivergent writers are here. As a self diagnosed autistic millennial, this is very comforting. There are days when I am burned out and don’t have the energy to write.

Eve Arnold once said,

A great way to slow down is to shift from creating to consuming.

This is particularly important if you are writing regularly and producing long-form content for others to enjoy and value. If you focus on quantity instead of quality early on in your writing journey, you may lose the passion or enthusiasm to write consistently.

However, I will always find time in the day to consume content.

When I joined Medium I started creating lists by topic so I could easily categorise the stories I read. I found this helped me with finding ideas and learning about what writing styles are popular.

I suggest you compile your lists; fill them with stories you like, and bookmark each one. Review the lists once in a while and ask yourself if you are getting value from what you read.

Eve emphasised:

The shift from consumer to creator is the real game-changer.

I couldn’t agree more. You can do it at any time of day. Better still, let the stories you like inspire you to write and produce something of value to others.

What articles have you read recently on Medium that inspire and motivate you to write?
