A Place I Thought Existed Only in the Movies
I met my husband at a gas station when we were 19 years old. I worked there and he was visiting my coworker. At the time, I never knew we’d be married one day.
We became quick friends and some years passed. Finally, when we were 23 we decided to date. Shortly after, we skipped the engagement and decided to get married. Actually, the court made us wait three days, so technically we did have a three day engagement. Soon after our wedding day, I traveled to Bremerton, Washington, and had the most memorable time of my life.
I remember when he asked me to fly to Washington to be with him for Christmas. The year was 2005. I had never flown on a plane and I was so excited. I had never traveled north before. I had only traveled south to Mexico, my father’s country of origin. Washington was so different from anything I had ever seen in real life. There was an entire store devoted to making fun of George W. Bush. They sold buttons and pencils and other things with anti-Bush slogans and jokes printed on them. In Texas, at the time, it was considered unthinkable to say anything negative about George W. Bush. I couldn’t…
