Kali leaned forward in her chair and slid her elbows onto the desk, making a steeple with her hands. She knew that, in the psychology of body language, this would represent honesty. ‘The whole thing has been a misunderstanding,’ she told the two policemen. ‘It was a game, I assure you.’
The sergeant glanced at his younger colleague, whose face was a mask of awkwardness and suspicion. Then he cleared his throat and continued his interrogation. ‘We have three separate witnesses who can testify to having seen you threatening a child with an offensive weapon,’ he said.
Kali rolled her eyes. ‘Yes, but it wasn’t loaded.’
The sergeant gave a grunt. ‘To point an unloaded gun at a person is still an offense, Missus Blake’ he said.
As he was saying this last sentence, Kali felt a surge of heat and knew that a part of her was about to do something daring.
