Chapter Nineteen — Revealed

The door whined on its rusty hinges as Lucas entered the cottage. His mother was still lying in bed, eyes closed. Only her face was visible from under the sheet. He thought it best not to wake her, as she probably needed all the rest she could get. He stood and watched the motion of her breathing for some time, as the thin fabric rose and fell. It was strange that she was sleeping. He’d hoped she would be up on her feet by now, and working on one of her paintings. Still, at least she looked peaceful. And she was safe.

After several minutes, Lucas hurried back up to the house. He called Aunt Kali but there was no response. Surely, she hadn’t gone out and left him alone as well?

He wandered through the kitchen, under the archway, and down the steps. As he glanced to the right, along the hallway, he noticed his dad’s office door was standing ajar.

Strange!

So far, the room had been kept locked whenever unoccupied. Perhaps his father had left for London in such high spirits that he’d forgotten to shut his door. Or perhaps keeping his office private simply didn’t matter anymore. After all, he was happier now, more at ease.
