Once again, the Oscars season has come around, celebrating the best and the brightest in the film industry. This annual event is a celebration of arts and artists, but it is not without its controversies.

In previous years, we have seen upsets and surprises with nominations and winners alike. 2017 is a year that comes to mind instantly, with musical ‘La La Land’ being mistakenly read out for Best Picture instead of the real winner, ‘Moonlight’. That year has already seen great issue with ‘La La Land’ in general, with the movie being called “Oscar bait” and a great offence to the black community for its storyline essentially upholding white folks as the ‘saviours’ of jazz — historically, a black music genre that held a depth of cultural history, pushed aside instead for the passable singing of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.

(No offence is intended at these two powerhouse actors, I adore their work, but c’mon? Their vocals, while well-trained, are not made for jazz and did not hold the power or emotions that makes jazz so influential. In my personal opinion, those critiques had a reason for existing, but that could be a whole other article.)
