How Barbie Deconstructs Allocentrism (As Argued by a Real-Life Asexual)

7 min readOct 8, 2023
I’m here to talk about my wife!

I’m sure that there are two questions on your mind right now.

  1. Will you explain just what the hell allocentrism is?
  2. Will you reveal spoilers for the Barbie movie?

The first answer is: Don’t worry, I will.

The second is, I’m sorry, I will.

The reason why I chose this topic is not just because the Barbie movie was a delight to watch and the next best thing since sliced bread. It’s also because I am invested in the struggles that asexual individuals face in life as someone who identifies with said sexuality — and the Barbie movie has a lot to say about this issue. It may not be obvious at first glance, but the asexual themes are there if you know where to look.

And boy, do I know how to look after realising how slim the pickings of representation are for asexual individuals.

In total, I spent 6 years believing I was bisexual and had my pick of partners. It was almost a point of pride that I wasn’t constricted for choice like heterosexuals, and I could find beauty in everyone around me.

However, life can be funny sometimes.

After just one proper attempt at dating, my life went from seemingly having all the choices to my brain…
