Introduction to Composition in Photography

I’ve written quite a few articles about photography composition, starting with my first piece ever. As I delve deeper into specific rules, this article focuses on one of my favourite techniques, the Golden Triangle Rule, while also explaining how to use geometry for better photography composition.

When it comes to arranging objects in the frame, I’d say composition happens holistically. While out photographing, we usually don’t have much time to think about which rule to apply at the moment.

That’s why I often compare learning photography to learning a language. Composition rules, like the Golden Triangle Rule, are your grammar — essential for structure, but not something you consciously consider once you’re fluent. Photography is a visual language, and composition is how you communicate with your audience.

Since we’re working within a rectangular frame, most composition rules connect back to geometry. How you position your subjects or elements can shape the narrative as strongly as the arrangement of words shapes a story.
