I see you, non-sportsies
Now let me change your mind just a little bit…
Despite growing up watching and playing them (and living in a very sports-rabid part of the country), I sure have a lot of people in my orbit who aren’t into the sports.
This is my ode to the non-sportsballers who roam among us, unbothered by standings and tipoffs and touchbacks and ground rule doubles.
To clarify, I’m talking here about non-sports *watchers*. These fine people, who I’m scientifically referring to as non-sportsies, may or may not have *played* the sports, but they sure don’t care to watch them or cheer for them or daydream about them.
My boyfriend (of the above rad tshirt collection) is perfectly athletic and physical, lest you picture a pale bookish fellow with poor posture and rickets; but he kind of intentionally doesn’t learn about teams or watch games and I suspect it has to do with growing up in another country and not entirely feeling welcome by the distinctly American, bro-y vibes of sports fandom when he moved here. So he willfully opts out.
Sometimes I suspect he even plays dumb on purpose, with the “What’s a big papi?” and the “Why did the goalie leave his net?” and especially the “I don’t understand why he didn’t put the ball in the basket?” questions.
