Misty Morning

Be present in your journey

I started the day with a walk through thick fog on a beach I know well. But the mist hid everything around me, except for the waves at my feet. I could not see where I was going or where I had been. I could only focus on and be present in that moment and place. As I walked barefoot in the sand I knew this was a gift from the ocean.

Simple things turn into such powerful lessons. My mind relaxed, and I was aware of the hardness or softness of the sand, the sound of the waves, and the call of the birds. The tide was receding, and the waves left three sand dollars in a row at my feet. Sometimes, someone would appear before me and walk past me, either saying hello or remaining lost in their own misty thoughts. And then my world would become sand and sea again.

By the time I had walked out to the jetty and back, the sun was breaking through enough to widen my view. I could see the buildings on the boardwalk. I realized I had known exactly where I was and where I was headed. I did not need to see the distractions around me, it was enough to be present with each step I took.

May you be fully present in your life journey. Shabbat Shalom.
