Indifferent High Schoolers
Exploring the problem of high school paralysis
As he slumped in his seat, dropped his bag, sagged into his seat and laid his head on the desk the late bell rang. Our class had a moment of silence, pledge to the flag, morning Youtube announcements, and roll call. Though he is a tenth grader, his head remains apathetically, glued to the top of his desk. The boy reads on a kindergarten grade reading level, and fear that others will know how incompetent he is keeps him apathetic.
Because the boy has ADHD and dyslexia, he believes that he is incapable of doing his work. What’s more, his home country doesn’t value education, in fact, neither do his parents and you guessed it! Neither does he. From this brief description, you can see why this young man struggles in school.
The goal of this article is to explore the problems and struggles of students, not solve it. I want to paint a picture of what it’s like walking in their shoes. I would really rather not tell you exactly when I graduated high school, but let’s just say that they didn’t know what ADHD or Dyslexia were. I have both. I will write more about some strategies to address these issues in future blog posts. For now, permit me to paint the picture from the perspective of a tenth grader. Maybe, you can fill in the parts that I left out.
I hope you enjoy -
