Hugo Boss is a name synonymous with luxury fashion today, but the origins of the brand are steeped in a much darker history. The company’s founder, Hugo Ferdinand Boss, was not only a successful businessman but also an early and active supporter of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party.

Early Life and Career
Born on July 8, 1885, in Metzingen, Württemberg, Hugo Boss began his career in textiles early on. After an apprenticeship as a merchant, he took over his family’s lingerie shop in 1908.
His life was interrupted by military service during World War I, after which he returned to the business world. In 1923, amidst Germany’s economic struggles, Boss founded his own clothing company.
