Fundamentals of Communication

There are many components of communication that, at one time, we have probably had the opportunity to use throughout our lifetime.

  1. Active listening
  2. Seeing another's perspective
  3. Reflection
  4. Body Presentation
  5. Empathy
  6. Psychological

Some are more effective than others, depending on your audience. But how often do we think of these communication skills when engaging with the person or people we are communicating with in that moment.

In my therapy practice, I get to demonstrate the above-mentioned skills to clients, both to understand what the client is saying, as well as how to respond to the information being transmitted to me by the client.

Modern Times

Unfortunately, the cell phone, tablet, or laptop has reduced the verbal method of communication by quite a lot. I tend to people watch when I am in public (an occupational hazard I am afraid). I have been observing couples and families for a while in public places, like at a restaurant or community activity. I feel discouraged to witness the lack of dialogue between the parties observed
