Happy Monday: I wish I had done this when I was younger. 24th March 2025.

Where are they today and what are they doing?

Wedding day of my parents. 11/12/1954. Who is the flower girl? Own picture.

I was reading a short article in Yahoo News yesterday, and the topic was about things people wished they had done when they were younger. Apart from the obvious (start saving early), one of the items was a wish to have stayed in contact with friends from youth. It got me thinking.

Life moves fast, and as we grow older, responsibilities pile up — careers, relationships, families, and personal growth all take center stage. Somewhere along the way, friendships that once felt unbreakable fade into the background. We assume there will always be time to reconnect, but time has a way of slipping past unnoticed.

Looking back, I can think of friends who were an essential part of my life at different stages — friends from the School of the Arts, friends from my UNISA and university days, colleagues from my earlier jobs teaching and in the motor industry. At the time, it felt like those bonds would last forever. Yet, without intentional effort, people drift apart. Sometimes the common interests are no longer as strong as before, or one of us may have simply moved away, a different job, a different city.

The rise of social media has made it easier to track where old friends are, but scrolling through updates is…
