Time to Start Over

A Poem of Renewal and Introspection

September
Renewal
Time to start over
Backpack
Pencils
Wiped-clean record
Growth over summer
Energy released
Time to start over
New year in place

What if
We had that chance
That opportunity
For renewal
Time to start over
As adults
In our job
Automatic promotion
For work well done
New team
New office
New things to learn
Time to start over
When’s it my turn

I originally wrote this poem as a response to this week’s #MMPoetryBattle prompt “September,” but I didn’t realize the full prompt called for a haiku. It is hard to pare two perspectives into 17 syllables, so I decided to post a derivative to the battle and share the full poem here. I know I’ve been MIA here on Medium for a while, but I have still been writing and learning a lot about myself as a multi-genre writer/poet. Maybe one day I’ll write about that…after I finish and publish these three books I have in progress.
