What Does It Mean to Grow Up?

I don’t know how to respond… Young people want to become old, while adults dream about their youth.

Is growing up about expressing your viewpoint and influencing people around you? Or is it just about getting a little taller or growing a few young hairs on your face? Is that what growing up entails? Or does it occur when you say or do things that only adults can do? Is this what it means to grow up? Is it something different from our childhood expectations?

A child’s eyes see only ultimate power, which is limited only by the authority of another adult. Growing up appears to imply the freedom to say whatever you want, anytime and whenever you want. It looks like a badge on your breast, indicating that you are no longer barred from “adult-only” talks. It feels like you’ve suddenly joined the ranks of people who are consulted and given options, so your opinion…
