The Secrets of Guyaju: China’s Mysterious Cliffside City Preserved Through the Ages:

3 min readFeb 23, 2025

The city, known as Guyaju, is ancient and mysterious, and perched in the rocky hills of China’s Hebei province. It has long puzzled scholars, historians and adventurers. Guyaju, world-renowned for its unfathomable building blocks and thrilling terrain, is a window into a puzzling earlier epoch, one of the most fantastic ruins in China. Guyaju, a site of interlocking buildings carved from steep cliffs, is the last of an ancient civilization that once thrived, a trophy of stone-age engineering preserved into the present day.

A Journey Through Time

Walking at the Guyaju is walking in ancient history. The site is believed to be a millennium old, though when it was constructed remains a mystery. Researchers say it was probably constructed during the Tang or Song Dynasties, however some insist it may be even older. But what sets this cliffside city apart is the ingenious design — more than 100 cave dwellings were carved directly into the rock face. It is thought that these dwellings were used by an ancient civilization, possibly hermits or religious group, but it is all speculation.
