Applying for something big? Don’t skimp on your cover letter. As tedious as they are to write, a stellar cover letter can nudge your application ahead of the rest.

I worked a job where cover letters were a big deal. 400 letters later, I’ve developed a list of 5 tips for success. Go on, give them a chance.

What Are Cover Letters For?

In terms of purpose, cover letters usually fall into two categories:

1. Asking for something

2. Informing someone of something

Cover letters that fall into the first category include job applications and funding requests. The second category — letters of recommendation or a formal introduction to a body of work.

Generally, they introduce you or your work.

That doesn’t exhaust 100% of possibilities, but it covers most.
