The Dark Night of the Soul: A Journey Through Spiritual Emptiness and Rebirth

3 min read5 days ago

Exploring the spiritual crisis known as the dark night of the soul…what it is, how it feels, and how it leads to deep transformation and rebirth.

There came a time when the life I had been living no longer made sense.
I didn’t recognize myself. Everything I thought I knew about who I was, what I believed, and where I was going began to unravel. I wasn’t just sad or lost…I felt spiritually empty.

It was as if a great silence had fallen over my soul, and all I could do was sit with it.

This was my dark night of the soul.

What Is the Dark Night of the Soul?

The phrase “dark night of the soul” comes from 16th-century mystic St. John of the Cross. He described it as a time of deep spiritual desolation… a kind of soul sickness where you feel disconnected from everything, and nothing has meaning or purpose anymore.

But you don’t have to be religious to experience it. Its a spiritual crisis, a natural part of awakening to your truth.

Today, many face the dark night through trauma, loss, awakenings, and emotional breakdowns.
It’s the collapse of identity… an ego death. A shedding of illusions.

A sacred un-becoming that clears the way for deeper truth.
