Addiction however you want to view it isolates and destroys. Some will look at addiction as a disease that people never break free from. Some people stand in meetings every day for years and years without touching their drug of choice but will still announce themselves as addicts. It helps them and keeps them on alert because they know they tend to self-destruct given one opportunity of their nectar.

Some view it as a matter of circumstance and learnt behaviour. A coping mechanism that has helped them navigate a life of trauma and abuse. Once through some kind of therapy, they learn different tools to use when they are not on their best day. Running to escape can always be a viable option.

For every addict though, amid their use, there will come a time when they feel alone. Cut off from family, burnt bridges along the way and a handful of acquaintances with a mutual consumer mindset towards each other. Relationships are shallow and will only grow if you have something to offer, normally money or connections to score.

This existence, this reality of feeling separate from the rest of the world can be enough to keep them locked in the cycle of their using—the self-fulfilling prophecy of feeling trapped, worthless and alone reaffirming the inner dialogue on a daily basis. So…
