Lost in AI hype are tools that are forever changing visual media. The repercussions, from entertainment to the police, are working through the pipeline.

I will show you where we are, where we’re going, and why some content will be made with cameras for a long time.

The Line of Specificity

On this line sits every video that can be made. On one end are non-specific generic shots. Every film has some of these — it’s the B roll that fills the gaps. They give the viewer a pause to digest, or a moment to set a scene. It could be a skyline or an out-of-focus cup.

They are unspecific and allow for a large tolerance for error. This means a dozen well-crafted AI renders will see you home. Most of these clips will soon be made by AI. This includes pre-titles and exit titles.

At the other end of this line are hyper-specific shots. These involve multiple characters, detailed movement, several camera phases and long takes.
