Max and Izzy reunite at the annual New Year’s Eve party
“I’m finding it hard to believe Garrett is who you ended up with,” I look beside me as Max takes up the space next to me, eager as ever to dominate my surroundings.
It works.
His voice is full of disdain for my husband as if the scowl on his face wasn’t evidence enough.
“Why do you say that?” I know why. Garrett is so different from anybody else I’ve ever been with.
When I said ‘yes’ to his proposal, literally nobody expected it. My poor Mom nearly fainted in shock when we told her.
“Why? Seriously, Izzy. A limp, weak-ass insurance broker living off his father’s money?”
“Is it hard to believe not everybody wants to end up with a man who beats people up for a living?” Knowing how it grates on him, I perfectly execute my snobby voice, looking at Max like he’s beneath me.
“I prefer loan shark, sweetie. And anybody else, no. You? Yes. All your life you’ve needed a man to have a bad streak for you to even look at him twice.”
