A brief overview of some different styles of therapy

Let’s say you’ve decided you could benefit from some therapeutic support, or you’ve been referred through work or by your GP. How do you know what kind of therapy might help you? How do you even know what the different kinds of therapy are? How do you know whether your experience will be similar to other people you’ve talked to? How do you know what might be best or helpful for your children or your relationship?

I’m going to provide a bit of information about several different kinds of therapy as well as places you can go to find out more. This is not an exhaustive list but is a good start…

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and close relations

Some therapeutic models are more well known than others — you might have heard of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a model that helps people to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings and behaviour and the links between these three things. There is a fairly good evidence base for CBT with certain people with certain difficulties (e.g. people experiencing difficulties with anxiety and panic attacks), but it doesn’t suit everyone and sometimes, understandably, if someone has tried it once, they might want to try something else another time.
